Onsite Practicum for Master-Level Counselling Students

Established Clinical Program

  • The site provides a structured, onsite mental health counselling program.
  • Dr. Poran Poregbal will be the clinical supervisor on-site and online for all students enrolled.
  • Students can complete 400 total practicum hours, including 200 direct client-facing hours.

Direct Client Contact Requirements

  • Minimum of 120 hours in individual counselling.
  • Remaining direct hours may include:
    • Intake and assessment
    • Group counselling (if applicable)
    • Couples or family counselling

Supervision and Onsite Support

  • A qualified supervisor or clinical staff member is present on-site at all times.
  • During virtual sessions, supervisors are accessible (e.g., by phone) for support and consultation.

Group Counselling Guidelines

  • Students do not facilitate groups independently; a qualified professional is always present.
  • Students may act as lead facilitator for at least 50% of sessions for direct hours to count.
  • Less than 50% participation is recorded as indirect (observational) hours.
  • Groups follow therapeutic standards:
    • Screening and assessment of participants
    • Safe, structured environment
    • Active participation and interpersonal process
  • Psychoeducational groups may count as indirect hours.

Scope of Practice (Student Competency Level)

  • Students are assigned clients with general mental health concerns appropriate to their level.
  • Students are not assigned high-risk or highly specialized cases, including:
    • Severe trauma or complex psychiatric conditions
    • Primary addictions or eating disorders
    • Clients requiring legal/court involvement
    • Very young children (under age guidelines)

Specialized Therapies

  • Students are not required to practice highly specialized modalities (e.g., EMDR, art therapy, play therapy).
  • These may only be observed and counted as indirect hours.

Client Assignment

  • The site provides clients for students.
  • Students are not responsible for marketing or building their own caseload.

Ethical and Clinical Oversight

  • Ongoing supervision ensures ethical, safe, and competent practice.
  • Cases exceeding student competency are transferred to the supervisor.

Supervision Structure

  • Supervision is provided by qualified clinicians within the organization.
  • Any involvement of independent contractors will comply with institutional agreement requirements.
